Video showing the evolution of a mean water depth map of drying soil with time, calculated using the MARMIT model. The soil was artificially moistened in a 90 mm petri dish following the outline of the Durham University shield logo. These maps were calculated excluding the 1400 nm atmospheric absorption band to approximate light availability under ground level solar illumination. Note the cross in the centres dries more quickly than the surrounding ring due to the heat from the lamp being centred on the shield.
