Bragg grating in a flexible and stretchable coreless polymer optical fiber

In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate fiber Bragg grating (FBG) fabrication in the flexible and stretchable coreless polymer optical fiber. The flexible polymer optical fiber is prepared with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The femtosecond laser direct writing and slit beam shaping are utilized to form periodic grating structures in the fiber. The fabricated FBG exhibits a large measurement range (around 40%) and the blue-shift responses to the temperature. Taking advantage of the unique mechanical and thermal performances of the PDMS fiber, the proposed FBG has considerable advantages over the traditional silica FBG devices for strain and temperature sensing. Hence, it has the potential to be a conducive sensing device for smart wearables and soft robotics.
